If you want to rejuvenate your appearance without surgery or downtime, fillers can be a great option. As a board-certified plastic surgeon, Dr. Jonathan R. Fugo skillfully administers these injectable products to enhance your features and smooth your skin. Here are four things you should know before you sit down in our New Windsor office for a filler treatment.
1. Fillers can be used to prevent cosmetic issues or correct them.
You may have heard about preventative injectable treatments, such as Dysport, which are performed before you ever notice the appearance of wrinkles, lines, and folds. The idea is that by acting early, preventative injections can delay the visible signs of aging. It comes as no surprise that fillers can also be used to ward off unwanted age-related concerns.
Most fillers have the added benefit of collagen stimulation in the skin long after the product has metabolized. Collagen is responsible for a healthy and strong skin structure. Injecting modest amounts of filler early on can help you maintain your youthful appearance.
While fillers can be a great preventative tool, patients primarily rely on them to address existing cosmetic issues. Fillers excel at smoothing away wrinkles and correcting volume loss. They can also be used to plump thin lips, enhance cheekbones, add volume to hollow temples, and more.
2. One injection can give you smoother, plumper skin for a minimum of several months.
Fillers are an incredibly popular treatment option, due in part to their ability to add volume and address cosmetic concerns in a single visit. Even more alluring, the results generally last upwards of three to six months. The longevity depends on the location of the filler and the specific product used. Some products last up to two years!
Fillers are not permanent, which can be a draw for some patients who don’t want to commit to an irreversible change. In the rare event that you aren’t happy with your results, most products can be easily dissolved in-office. Conversely, patients who want to sustain their new look need to return for maintenance sessions.
3. Different fillers have different applications.
There is no one-size-fits-all filler. Though these products all utilize the same principle of adding volume beneath the surface of the skin, they have unique formulas and applications.
For example, Sculptra® Aesthetic is a collagen stimulator. It does not offer instant results since it works by gradually encouraging the production of collagen in the treatment area. However, it can improve the appearance of nasolabial folds, facial depressions, and other concerns for up to two years.
On the other hand, Radiesse® is a Calcium Hydroxylapatite filler that offers immediate results. Plus, it is currently the only filler deemed safe and effective by the FDA to correct volume loss in the hands.
We also offer Restylane® and Belotero Balance®, two popular hyaluronic acid fillers, as well as others. The right filler for you depends on your concerns and expectations for the treatment.
4. Good results should be subtle and flattering.
Typically, our New York patients want to look their best without looking overdone. They are concerned it will be obvious that they’ve received cosmetic injections. However, we assure them that expertly injected filler should look incredibly natural!
The goal is for your friends and family to say things like, “You look great” or, “You look well-rested.” They will notice your rejuvenated appearance, but it won’t be apparent that you’ve had filler. New techniques involve subtly plumping and lifting the face without overfilling a specific problem area.
This isn’t to say that fillers can’t achieve dramatic results. Dr. Fugo will work with you to accomplish your cosmetic goals, whatever they may be.
